Where to add the Otto chat code in Big Cartel, which plan you need, where to find a product feed, and what to do if the chat does not show.

Big Cartel is an online store platform. You add the chat code in the Shop designer under Integration Code, where it stays even when you change your theme. It takes about 5 minutes.

What you need

  • An Otto account. You find the chat code in the panel under Overview, on the Installation & integrations card, on the Big Cartel tile. It is under the More platforms tile, and you can also search for it.
  • A paid Platinum or Diamond plan. On the free Gold plan, Big Cartel only lets you edit CSS.

Chat code

On the Big Cartel tile, click Copy code. You get one line with your company’s public key:

The sample shows pk_vas_kluc instead of a key, the tile gives you the code with your own key. The key is not a password, you do not need to hide it. Add the code once, it covers the whole site.

Adding the code

  1. Log in at app.bigcartel.com and click Shop designer in the sidebar.
  2. Open the Code tab.
  3. Under Integration Code, click Body and paste the chat code. Big Cartel places it before </body>.
  4. Click Done.
  5. Click Publish to make the change live. Exit only saves it without publishing.

In the Classic Admin, open Account, then Design and the Code tab. The rest is the same.

If you move to the free Gold plan, Big Cartel removes the code from Integration Code.
The chat ties itself to the address where it first shows up. If you have your own domain, open it first after publishing, not the .bigcartel.com address.

Checking it works

  1. Open your website in a new browser window and reload. A chat bubble should pop up in the bottom right.
  2. Send the chat a test question. Otto answers within a few seconds.
  3. In the panel, under Settings, Connections, the Your website row shows the domain the chat runs on.
The chat shows only after you click Publish. It does not show at checkout, because Big Cartel does not let you edit the checkout.

Product catalogue

On paid plans, Big Cartel creates a Google format feed for its Google Shopping integration. Its address usually looks like https://your-shop.bigcartel.com/google.xml.

Paste the feed address in the panel under Settings, Catalogue, and click Check feed. The panel tells you how many products it found, and Otto keeps the feed up to date on its own. More in Product catalogue.

Troubleshooting

There is no Integration Code in the Shop designer

Your shop is on the free Gold plan, which only allows CSS edits. Move to the Platinum or Diamond plan.

The chat works on .bigcartel.com but not on my domain

The chat tied itself to the address where it first showed up and does not move from .bigcartel.com to your domain on its own. Write to us.

The chat disappeared after a theme change

Code in Integration Code stays when you change themes. If you pasted it straight into the theme code (Advanced template code), it is lost when you change or update the theme. Put it in Integration Code.

Also check

  • Reload the page without cache with Ctrl+F5, or open it in a private window.
  • The code should be on the page only once, a second copy is ignored.
  • A cookie consent bar can block scripts until the visitor agrees. If the chat only shows up after consent, see Cookie consent.
  • If your site sends a Content-Security-Policy header, allow https://ottoai.sk in it, as shown in Content-Security-Policy.
  • In the browser console (F12), look for messages starting with [Otto]. They tell you what the chat is missing.
  • Still nothing? Write to us at podpora@ottoai.sk and include your website address.

Removing the chat

In Shop designer, the Code tab, Integration Code, Body, delete the chat code line, click Done and then Publish.
